The Accellion software-supply-chain data breach from December 2020 has claimed another victim, with a major Michigan hospital system notifying at least 1,500 patients last week of data exposure. Impacted patient health information included name, procedures, physician names, medical record numbers, and service dates. This Michigan hospital is now among at least 11 other healthcare organizations affected by the attack on the Accellion software. The victim list also includes a major pharmacy chain and healthcare insurer. In addition, the Accellion attack affected universities, banks, state governments, a leading global financial services company, a law firm, and an aerospace manufacturer.
Next Steps
Security professionals advise businesses to be cautious with regards to all third-party software in use, and to examine all software to ensure it meets security standards. Businesses are also advised to engage in strong data governance to address security with not only data, but also people, processes, and solutions.
