An all-American, Chicago-based candy maker is the latest victim of ransomware. The company—which makes numerous well-known candy brands, including the Halloween “favorite” candy corn—confirmed that an attack took place on October 9. It appears that production of candy products were disrupted for a time but resumed shortly, with the company reporting that it was operating at near full capacity late last week. It further stated that Halloween candy supplies should not be affected because most shipments went out before the attack.
While the candy maker has not released details, some industry researchers believe that the ransomware gang BlackMatter may be behind the attack. The company is said to be collaborating with law enforcement.
Next Steps
Organizations that are victims of ransomware attacks are reminded that ransomware payment does not guarantee file recovery. Victims are also discouraged from paying the ransom by the FBI and other law enforcement groups. The FBI also urges victims to report ransomware incidents to your local FBI field office or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
