FBI reports toll scam texts plaguing phones nationwide

Toll payment scams are on the rise. The FBI reported more than 2,000 complaints of toll payment text scams this month alone.

“These texts are not necessarily new. We have been seeing them for years now, especially around this time of the year as we approach spring break and summer, and people are traveling more,” said Emily O’Carroll, cybersecurity strategist with GuidePoint Security.

But what is new, is the FBI reporting more than 2,000 of these texts going out to people all over the U.S. in less than two weeks.

“There’s going to be a link that they’re trying to get you to click. The purpose of the link is for these scammers to be able to collect very sensitive personal information about you, they’re trying to trick people into possibly downloading malware or other viruses,” O’Carroll said.
